You can always trust Marvel to bring out the weirdest looking superhero and get people to read about it. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is the latest of these to get their own comic.

This is set to be an ongoing series written by Ryan North – author of the Adventure Time comics, so you know he is no stranger to turning something that seems off the wall into good reading. Taking the helm on illustration is rising star Erica Henderson.

The comic follows the happy, young Squirrel Girl as she steps away from saving the world and goes to college. Her story begins as she moves onto campus but then has to fight Kraven the Hunter, who has a beef with squirrels. Ryan has promised to reveal the reasons why later.

In an interview, Ryan explained that the story sees an almost stand alone episode where Squirrel Girl tries to carve out a new life for herself before she gets thrown into an adventure that takes her across the Marvel Universe.

Real name Doreen Green, she’s a cute, happy character who loves to help people and has the power to unleash an army of squirrels on anyone who stands in the way of her quest for good.

As with many Marvel characters, fans may have seen Squirrel Girl before. Her first appearance saw her trying to be a sidekick for Iron Man and she later became one of the Great Lakes Avengers. Here she met her sidekick Tippy-Toe, who will be joining her in this new series. Squirrel Girl also turned up in the Ultimate Spiderman television series.

She’s one of the toughest heroes in the Marvel Universe, having defeated the likes of Deadpool, Wolverine, Dr Doom and Thanos so she’ll definitely give future adversaries a run for their money. Among the names she’s set to face in the future are Galactus and Whiplash.

Squirrel Girl will be heading onto comic book shop shelves in January.
