An advanced look at what’s coming between May and August this year from DC’s collected editions department.

This title is resolicited. All previous orders are canceled.

The recently cancelled Absolute Swamp Thing volume 2 has been resolicited, with a delayed date of 21/10/2020. Anyone claiming this book has been actually cancelled is wrong, it’s just delayed. As per the latest trend at DC, all ‘Vertigo’ titles are now labelled ‘DC Black Label’.

Volume 1 of the hotly anticipated and delayed-twice A4 slipcase edition of Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing has gotten a second printing. Hopefully this will fix the scary spine issues with the end product anyone with the first printing faced, but it will not ‘fix’ the recolouring, which was not very popular at all. Although it is very pretty.

BATMAN ADVENTURES: BATGIRL — A LEAGUE OF HER OWN TP
written by PAUL DINI, TY TEMPLETON, and SCOTT PETERSON
art by RICK BURCHETT and TIM LEVINS

In these previous, uncollected stories inspired by the hit Batman: The Animated Series, Batgirl swings across the rooftops of Gotham City alongside Batman, Nightwing, and Robin to battle the likes of Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Ra’s al Ghul. Continuing the recent love DC has shown the 90s Batman: The Animated Series, a new paperback collecting Batgirl Adventures #1 (one shot) and Batman: Gotham Adventures #8, #9, #22 and #38 has been solicited for June. None of these issues have been collected in a collected edition before, so this is nice. Especially for fans of Batgirl and B:TAS!

August sees the final third of the Grant Morrison Batman epic in omnibus edition. Following on from the end of the second volume, we see Bruce Wayne finally return as Batman and set up Batman Inc.

LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT: MATT WAGNER HC
written by MATT WAGNER
art and cover by MATT WAGNER
Writer/artist Matt Wagner’s noir tales of the Dark Knight are collected in a single volume for the first time! Batman has spent his first year fighting organized crime—but nothing in his early career as the Caped Crusader has prepared him for the new menace facing Gotham City: super-villains! Plus, Two-Face creates an army of deformed slaves! Collects Batman and the Monster Men #1-6, Batman and the Mad Monk #1-6, Batman: Riddler: The Riddle Factory #1, Batman #54, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #28-30, and a story from Batman Black and White #3.
ON SALE 06.03.20
$49.99 US | 488 PAGES

This standard sized hardcover will fit snugly within the writer and artist-centric ‘Legends of the Dark Knight’ and ‘Tales of Batman’ standard sized hardcovers DC have been publishing for nearly a decade. Unfortunately we don’t yet know if the spine will match previous volumes’ style or if it’ll go off on a tangent like Jim Aparo volume 2’s did. Regardless of the mismatching spines though, this material is solid and a must have for Batman fans.

DARK KNIGHT RETURNS: THE GOLDEN CHILD DELUXE EDITION HC
written by FRANK MILLER
art and cover by RAFAEL GRAMPá
Frank Miller’s return to the Dark Knight universe gets the deluxe edition treatment!
It’s been three years since the events of Dark Knight III: The Master Race. Lara has spent the time learning to be more human, and Carrie Kelley has been growing into her new role as Batwoman. But a terrifying evil has returned to Gotham City, and Lara and Carrie must team up to stop this growing threat—and they have a secret weapon. Young Jonathan Kent, “the golden child,” has a power inside of him unlike anything the world has ever seen, and it’s about to be unleashed…
Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child is Frank Miller’s return to the world of the Dark Knight, and joining him is superstar artist Rafael Grampá, the mastermind behind the groundbreaking Mesmo Delivery, plus behind-the-scenes materials.

The fourth instalment in Miller’s ‘The Dark Knight’ saga will shortly be available in deluxe trim hardcover. Some fans may enjoy this, but this is Frank Miller at his absolute bat-shit craziest. You’ve been warned!

DC COMICS: THE ASTONISHING ART OF AMANDA CONNER HC
written by AMANDA CONNER, JIMMY PALMIOTTI, DARWYN COOKE, TOM KING, and others
art by AMANDA CONNER
cover by AMANDA CONNER
In a sequel to DC Comics: The Sequential Art of Amanda Conner, we present more of the ultra-talented Ms. Conner’s comics, including Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #1-4, Harley Quinn 25th Anniversary Special #1, The Kamandi Challenge #3, Harley Quinn: Be Careful What You Wish For #1, Batman #68, the Supergirl stories from Wednesday Comics #1-12, and more.
ON SALE 06.03.20
$39.99 US | 256 PAGES
7.0625” x 10.875”
FC | ISBN: 978-1-77950-176-9

This new book, showcasing the artwork of Amanda Conner, is solicited as a deluxe sized hardcover. This writer expects this book to be cancelled and resolicited as standard sized to match the previous book and other books of its type. The material here is less a cohesive story (Imagine taking a story from Kamandi Challenge out of context! Poor show!) and more a celebration of Conner’s exquisite art.

HARLEY QUINN: THE NEW 52 BOX SET
written by AMANDA CONNER, JIMMY PALMIOTTI, ADAM GLASS, SCOTT SNYDER, PETER J. TOMASI, and others
art by CHAD HARDIN, FEDERICO DALLOCCHIO, GREG CAPULLO, JASON FABOK, and others
In the past decade, Harley Quinn grew from a fan favorite to a mainstream sensation, and this box set collects three volumes that helped bring the character to new levels of popularity! In Harley Quinn Vol. 1: Hot in the City, witness Harley’s big move to Coney Island as she becomes a roller derby queen—all while continuing her criminal career! Then, alongside villains such as Deadshot and King Shark, she’s recruited by the government to take on deadly missions in Suicide Squad Vol. 1: Kicked in the Teeth! Plus, Harley is drawn into the madness of the Bat-Family’s darkest hour in The Joker: Death of the Family!
ON SALE 09.16.20
$59.99 US

It is expected that this boxset simply be a thin cardboard slipcase around three paperbacks – that’s not to say the material isn’t good. It is, however, already available in superior editions. I would recommend the omnibus editions, although they do not collect Suicide Squad. Yet.

GREEN LANTERN: 80 YEARS OF THE EMERALD KNIGHT HC
written by BILL FINGER, JOHN BROOME, DENNIS O’NEIL, LEN WEIN, ALAN MOORE, RON MARZ, GEOFF JOHNS, and others
art by MARTIN NODELL, GIL KANE, NEAL ADAMS, DAVE GIBBONS, DARWYN COOKE, and others
new cover by JIM LEE and SCOTT WILLIAMS
DC celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Emerald Knight with this new hardcover collection of the best Green Lantern tales across the decades! This new hardcover celebrates the legacy of Green Lantern, from the debut of Alan Scott in 1940, to the character’s rebirth in 1959 as test pilot Hal Jordan—part of a vast Green Lantern Corps that serves justice across the galaxy—to John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Jessica Cruz, and beyond. Included in this title are some of the greatest Green Lantern tales ever, featuring stories and art by comics’ top talents.
ON SALE 06.10.20
$29.99 US | 7.062” x 10.875” 400 PAGES | FC
ISBN: 978-1-77950-279-7

This book is again solicited with a deluxe sized trim, but without the deluxe nametag. If this proceeds, I would expect the spine to match the recent Detective Comics and Action Comics deluxe editions. That said, most celebratory anniversary hardcovers tend to be standard sized.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL OMNIBUS VOL. 2 HC
written by KEITH GIFFEN, J.M. DEMATTEIS, and others
art by KEITH GIFFEN, CHRIS SPROUSE, MIKE McKONE, MARSHALL ROGERS, DARICK ROBERTSON, and others
new cover by KEVIN MAGUIRE
Maxwell Lord’s domination of the Justice League continues in this second omnibus of never-before-collected issues! As the League franchises out to Antarctica, Lord Havok and the Extremists arrive on Earth to continue their galactic conquest, and Blue Beetle and Booster Gold come up with another of their countless schemes. Collects Justice League America #31-50, Justice League Europe #7-25, Justice League America Annual #4, Justice League Europe Annual #1, Justice League Quarterly #1, and Justice League International Special #1.
ON SALE 08.26.20
$125.00 US | 7.0625” x 10.875” | 1192 PAGES
FC | ISBN: 978-1-77950-296-4

Justice League International Omnibus volume 2 brings us one step closer to a near complete Justice League run in oversized hardcover, right back from the very first issue. This is an unexpected surprise, given the first volume didn’t sell very well and was plagued with a couple of unforgivable printing errors. Hopefully, with this book may come a silent and corrected reprint of volume 1. Stay tuned and we’ll announce this if we get any information!

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA BY BRAD MELTZER: THE DELUXE EDITION HC
written by BRAD MELTZER and GEOFF JOHNS
art by ED BENES, DALE EAGLESHAM, SHANE DAVIS, GENE HA, and others
cover by ED BENES
New York Times bestselling novelist Brad Meltzer’s entire run on Justice League of America is collected for the first time! After the darkest hour in the history of the DC Universe, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman meet to choose who will make up the new Justice League of America. Then, the new team discovers that several members of the Legion of Super-Heroes are in the present! With the help of the Justice Society of America, Superman and his team must track down all seven Legionnaires to discover why these heroes have traveled back in time! Collects Justice League of America (2006) #0-12 and Justice Society of America (2006) #5-6.
ON SALE 06.10.20
$39.99 US | 7.0625” x 10.875” | 470 PAGES
FC | ISBN: 978-1-77950-245-2

This fairly modern story is a hefty one, written by superstar mainstream political thriller novelist Brad Meltzer with help from comic book legend Geoff Johns. Awesome to see it soon available, and in deluxe hardcover too!

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA: THE SILVER AGE OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC NEW EDITION
written by GARDNER FOX and DENNIS O’NEIL
art by MIKE SEKOWSKY and others
cover by MIKE SEKOWSKY and MURPHY ANDERSON
In these epics from Justice League of America #31-76 and Mystery in Space #75, the World’s Greatest Super Heroes face Brain Storm, the Key, the Royal Flush Gang, Felix Faust, and numerous threats from across the cosmos! Guest-starring Metamorpho, the Justice Society of America, and more!
ON SALE 08.26.20
$99.99 US | 7.0625” x 10.875”
888 PAGES
FC | ISBN: 978-1-77950-174-5

Unfortunately this new edition features a completely new dust jacket design, which is very far removed from subsequent volumes. I would assume this is the new style of cover for these books. Great, if you’re new to this game. Less great, if you already have the others and have been waiting patiently for a reprint.

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES: FIVE YEARS LATER OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC
written by KEITH GIFFEN, TOM BIERBAUM, MARY BIERBAUM, DAN JURGENS, and AL GORDON
art by KEITH GIFFEN, JASON PEARSON, COLLEEN DORAN, CURT SWAN, STUART IMMONEN, DAN JURGENS, and others
cover by DUSTY ABELL and BOB SMITH
It’s the Legion of Super-Heroes like you’ve never seen them before, as the United Planets becomes a darker place, with familiar characters changed and the Earth overtaken by alien invaders—prompting the Legion to take on these dangerous new threats. Now this bold era of DC history is collected in an omnibus edition! Collects Legion of Super-Heroes #1-39, Timber Wolf #1-5, Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #1-3, and Adventures of Superman #478.
ON SALE 08.12.20
$150.00 US | 7.0625” x 10.875” | 1,424 PAGES
FC | ISBN: 978-1-77950-313-8

This is a very hotly anticipated collection collects over three years of the series that started in 1989. This is the period where Keith Giffen started pencilling and writing the series on his own for a bit, and the legendary team led by Superboy wasn’t allowed to even mention Superboy. Yep.

NIGHTWING YEAR ONE DELUXE EDITION HC
written by SCOTT BEATTY and CHUCK DIXON
art and cover by SCOTT McDANIEL and ANDY OWENS
Since being cut loose by Batman, Dick Grayson is Robin no more. Unsure of what to do and where to turn, he seeks solace from familiar sources—including Superman, Batgirl, and Deadman. Unable to avoid fighting crime, Grayson begins a new odyssey, donning a new uniform and gaining a new heroic identity. Collects Nightwing #101-106.

$29.99 US | 7.0625” x 10.875”

Following on from ‘Robin: Year One’ and ‘Batgirl: Year One’, the third ‘Year One’ collaboration between Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty is finally releasing in a matching deluxe edition. This material is golden, you can’t really get much better Nightwing material than this. Once these are finished, we can only hope for Robin and Nightwing omnibus editions to match!

PLASTIC MAN: RUBBER BANDED: THE DELUXE EDITION HC
written by KYLE BAKER and SCOTT MORSE
art by KYLE BAKER and SCOTT MORSE
cover by KYLE BAKER
In this title that collects Plastic Man’s 2004 series in its entirety for the first time, Plastic Man must come to terms with his criminal past when the FBI assigns him to catch his underworld alter ego, Eel O’Brian. Can Plas clear his name? Maybe, with the help of his beautiful, ruthless new partner, FBI Agent Morgan. Or maybe not, thanks to the completely useless help of his old crime-fighting sidekick, Woozy Winks.

This series is already available in deluxe size, despite what the solitication says, in three omnibus editions which are complete. They may be more expensive, but three readily available omni are better than collecting this series as it releases over the next five or six years. Hardcore fans may opt for the Absolute editions instead, given the extremely high quality paper and A4 sized page in luxury slipcase. But this edition will please newcomers.

SUPER FRIENDS: SATURDAY MORNING COMICS VOL. 1 HC

This item is resolicited. All previous orders are canceled.

This is a new solicitation of a previously cancelled collection. Dimensions are missing, so expect this to be resolicited again with the correct details, hopefully in time for the June release slot. This is strictly for fans of the cartoon, the material is dated and probably more for the more mature reader or archivist.

BATMAN/WONDER WOMAN: THE HIKETEIA DELUXE EDITION HC
written by GREG RUCKA
art by J.G. JONES and WADE VON GRAWBADGER
cover by J.G. JONES
The celebrated Wonder Woman/Batman tale returns in a new deluxe edition! An ancient, long-forgotten ritual bonds Diana to a young lady from Gotham City with a deeply troubled past. Worse yet, Wonder Woman is forced into the role of her teacher and protector, and soon discovers that she also must stand between her student and the earthly justice that the Dark Knight so rightly seeks. Includes a gallery of covers by J.G. Jones!

I am perhaps biased, but Greg Rucka is easily one of the best writers of this generation. This features Rucka’s earlier work with Wonder Woman, prior to his two ongoing series. This is from 2000, and isn’t Rucka’s best work with Wonder Woman, but it’s not to be missed!

I wouldn’t normally include single issues or miniseries, but this one caught my eye and it should you, too. Paul Dini and Alan Burnett return to the world of Batman: The Animated Series, in comic form, with art from returning ‘Batman Adventures’ artist Ty Templeton. It’s digital first, so consider ordering it on your Comixology account. Hopefully this will receive a hardcover release rather than a standard paperback upon its release after the series’ conclusion. I wouldn’t expect it until January next year, though.

This issue will ship with 10 covers.

Again, I wouldn’t normally mention this, but this is a special one. This prestige format issue will be ‘square bound’ like #Detective Comics #1000 and Action Comics #1000 before it, essentially making this a thin paperback with a proper spine unlike an ordinary issue. I would also expect a deluxe edition of this full book in addition to the 80th anniversary hardcover in this round of solicitations, around December time.
