Déformer make a vitriolic statement of intent with debut single “Spin”. The hull-hailing four-piece are the architects of a nightmarish post-punk sound – a helter skelter of inky chord progressions, with profane changes of pace from dizzying, to outright threatening.

Speaking about the track, the band explains, ‘Being the first song we wrote to release as Déformer, “Spin” cements our new, more melodic and intricate direction right out the gate. Thematically, the song focusses on how external forces in one’s life can dominate and distort their thought processes to the point where it can feel like all sense of identity is lost. The erratic music is a response to this, with the eerie slow-moving soundscapes and aggressive post-punk explosions demonstrating the anger and fear this control makes us feel.”

With macabre vocals straddling the boundaries between edge-of-panic yelps to drawn-out taunts, “Spin” is the sonic expression of everything you try to suppress. The song’s third act is nauseating; as the pace quickens, the command, “Spin, spin, spin your mind!” is like that of a puppeteer, demanding anarchy as the guitars spiral out of control.

For a debut single, “Spin” confirms Déformer’s place as an emerging force to be reckoned with on the Hull scene.
