In our latest Reverbnation spotlight, we chat to Nicki Taylor, vocalist for Los Angeles rockers, Running The Risk.

S] What, or who are your great musical inspirations?

N] “Each of us come from very different musical backgrounds so our inspirations really differ. As a singer, I’ve always been inspired by the vocals of Joan Jett, Adam Gontier, Hayley Williams, and Ozzy Osbourne. I know our guitarist Nick was really inspired by Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhodes.. Even though we’re each inspired by very different artists, we all agree on our love for rock music.

“Unfortunately, we also agree that the rock we hear on the radio these days is missing a certain passion that makes the genre great. That’s something we’d really like to change. Hopefully we can be that breath of fresh air in the middle of a playlist that seems to all sound the same.”

S] What about personally, what kinds of themes and ideas can inspire your songs?

N] “Really, anything worth saying can inspire a song. Whether it be an opinion or emotion, if it’s real then someone out there can relate.”

S] What song that you are working on right now best defines your sound, and why?

N] “I think it’s difficult to use a song the fans haven’t heard as an example of what we feel best defines our sound, but I think our most recent release the ‘Because We Can’ EP is the best explanation we can give. We are a harder rock band, but it’s so fun to throw in the synths and get all kinds of crazy sounds. I think we really found a sweet balance in ‘Because We Can’.”

S] Do you have a message for any UK fans?

N] “UK fans! We’d love more than anything to make it over seas to you one day. Thank you for your ongoing support and hopefully we can make it happen together!”

S] What can people expect from your live show?

N] “The most important thing to us about our live show besides the sound is putting on a good show and keeping the energy up. You can always expect to have a good time with Running The Risk!”

S] What are some of your biggest challenges right now?

N] “I think the biggest challenge for any band is just finding out the best way to get heard.”

S] What’re your plans as we move into 2013?

N] “More music, more shows, more fun. Hopefully you’ll follow us for the ride!”
