Lo-fi garage-rock duo …And The Hangnails today (May 30) release the video for their new single ‘You & I’. You can also download the track for free from the band’s Soundcloud (check the embed link at the bottom). This awesome raw production (created by TRASH Films) features sweaty live footage from a particularly raucous house-party in Leeds, and most importantly, loads of really sweaty people dancing around appreciatively (and with reckless abandon) to the tune!

Vocalist and guitarist Martyn Fillingham comments on the video: “It was at this house-party gig we’ve been co-running at a friend’s terraced house in Leeds. There were hundreds of people there; all the rooms were full. Girls were dancing, guys were beating each other up, and people were crowd-surfing. It was awesome. I didn’t think people actually had house parties like this until we first played one of these shows. I’m looking forward to the next one!”

Of the track and its lyrical meaning, Martyn continues: “It was one of the first songs that we wrote for the new album. A lot of it is metaphorical. The first lyric; ‘I bleed from my eyes’, comes from a dream where I was looking into a mirror and my eyes were bleeding, which I thought was a great bit of imagery for the song, which is about considering your relationship with somebody and wrestling with uncertainties, but coming to know that you believe in them (and the relationship).”

…And The Hangnails was formed by Martyn Fillingham (guitar, vocals) and Steven Reid (drums, vocals), two musicians living in York who were originally in a number of different bands but shared a common interest in being able to make music with the freedom (and the challenge) that comes with having just one other person to deal with. Martyn describes it as “creativity within limitations”.

With their first record out before they ever played a live show, early gigs proved a hit, with an incredible live energy and a penchant for killer hooks engaging a whole new fanbase. Well-deserved support slots with the likes of Wet Nuns, Deap Vally, Drenge, The Jim Jones Revue and The Fall have only added to the buzz. Appreciation for the band’s sound has also come from Jericho Keys at BBC Introducing in York, and many other DJs in North Yorkshire and Humberside.

Before ‘Rut’, …And The Hangnails released two full-length albums; the first, entitled ‘No Time For Naysayers’ in April 2011 was written and recorded in just four days entirely using an H2 Zoom dictaphone. The band’s second record, ‘BARE’ was released in 2012.
