This scribe’s knees creek, feet ache and my head hurts. Why? Because I have just seen Sub Focus yes, it was well worth the pain. Having become aware of his existence about a year-and-a-half ago after hearing ‘Timewarp‘ on the radio, tonight, I arrived expecting commercial, Pendulum-style Drum & Bass. Now, I like D&B as much as the next guy, (unless the guy is my Dad, in which case I like it a whole lot more), but an entire night of it leaves me with palpitations.
Fortunately, Sub Focus mix it up something chronic with a foot-stomping, speaker-blowing, knee-bending set that encompassed D&B, dubstep, fidget house (yes readers, that is a real genre), and electro, and I danced like I’d never danced before. By the end of the night I could just about hear my heart under the tinnitus and I’m thrilled to say it was still beating steadily.
Highlights of the night are hits ‘Rock It‘, ‘Could This Be Real‘ and and of course ‘Timewarp‘, and I left having been blown away by the awesome light show – a huge, hollow circle of lights (apparently called a “Hexmod LED DMX controlled light show”), which breathes life into the artwork for his self-titled album. Through the glow it is possible to just about make out Sub Focus bobbing away behind his equipment. Awesome show. Great night.
