Sir Paul McCartney is to perform as frontman for Nirvana for one night only, it has been reported. Tonight, at a special concert held in New York, surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic reunite to perform for the first time in 20 years.

This is pretty weird because, well, the former Beatles man isn’t really known for having a “raw” rock voice. McCartney will reportedly perform a new song with the pair at Hurricane Sandy charity concert 12-12-12, which will also feature The Rolling Stones.

The 70-year-old pop legend said he received a phone call from Grohl, who currently plays with the Foo Fighters, asking him to come and “jam with some mates”.

McCartney played alongside Novoselic and the Foos’ Pat Smear, but said: “I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?'”, he added, “and somebody whispered to me, ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

Weird. Really weird. Possible the weirdest news item we’ve posted all year?
