Leeds quintet Household Dogs have shared new single ‘One Last Look Around’ – the final preview track from ‘Come Stay With Me’, a fundraising compilation by and for Leeds based artists.

Formed in 2018, Household Dogs make dark, thoughtful and striking post-punk anchored in gothic, 80’s inspired alternative rock. Since their emergence the band have been gaining more and more interest with their fiercely independent spirit, intense live show and a string of singles that show a band growing ever more comfortable mining deeper musical and lyrical depths.

Following lots of support on BBC 6 Music, appearances at festivals including Live at Leeds and support slots with artists including The Blinders and Fizzy Blood, the band have had to shelve much of their plans for now but immediately set about the task of recording new music in lockdown, resulting in this new single and their contribution to the ‘Come Stay With Me’ compilation.

Declan Newcombe – Household Dogs
“The song was written, recorded and mixed under this ‘lockdown’. The situation meant working remotely, perhaps not the most artistically organic method, but it worked. It gave us the time and space to work out where we stood and where we wanted to steer the song. As with all of our songs everything was done independently. We all write and our bassist Matthew, produces and mixes. This kind of control let us push ourselves somewhere we felt we hadn’t been. ‘One Last Look Around’ still sounds like us but feels wholly different.

Lyrically, the song gravitates around moments. Those moments in which you see beauty, happiness and for some, God. It can be heart breaking to realise you will never experience those moments the same way again and like drug addicts we pursue these highs. Repeated mantras try to anchor the song in what is an un-anchorable, fleeting moment. I pushed myself into an uncomfortable place with the story. Writing about what I see as shared human flaw. For me, it took time to get used to the tension the lyrics created. Throughout our work we are attempting to transform soundscapes to landscapes, creating images, something more three dimensional than just a story or a song. I feel ‘One Last Look Around’ works on that level. The pursuit of a sonic image.”

‘One Last Look Around’ will be released on ‘Come Stay With Me’, a collection of 13 new songs from bands and artists across Leeds including Talkboy, Dialect, Team Picture, Van Houten, Dead Naked Hippies and more. Out on the 17th July on eco-vinyl, all profits from Come Stay With Me will be shared between the contributing artists.

The label will be hosting an online launch party in association with local venue The Brudenell Social Club on Friday 17th July on the venues new  ‘Brudenell TV’ platform – the launch party will feature new video content from all featured artists and a number of Q&A’s including Declan and Matt from Household Dogs.

Launching in 2015, Come Play With Me is a record label, promoter, magazine and development organisation based in Leeds working to support artists in the region and releasing a series of 7” record splits, compilations, magazines and more.
