Doomgaze outfit Sugar Horse have released a cover of the classic Tears For Fears song with a uniquely twisted interpretation.

Coming off the back of last years’ Waterloo Teeth EP, a collaborative effort featuring members of IDLES, Biffy Clyro, Heriot and Conjurer, the band carry the momentum into a cover of an ‘80s classic.

“It’s a song we’ve wanted to have a crack at for a while now and I think the fact it’s still clearly that song after our hamfisted mangling, is testament to just how genius Roland and Curt were”, the band say.

“To me, it’s a song about passion and the obsessive pursuit of said passion. With all the frustration and conflict that creates with other who may not share or understand that kind of compulsion. It’s something that’s actually very close to my heart and something that allowed us to really throw ourselves into this tune.”

Originally from Tears For Fears’ second album, Songs from the Big Chair, the song was first released in 1985, an album which Sugar Horse say “defined pop music for the second half of the 80s.”

Described a delivering a “sucker punch of sludge-punk” by Knotfest, Sugar Horse formed in Bristol in 2015. DRUJ materialised four years after the band emerged from the primordial soup. Swiftly followed by 2020’s DRUGS, 2021 then saw the release of their debut album, The Live Long After, recorded in a former Lutheran church. The album was released via Small Pond records and received positive reviews from publications such as The Quietus, Echoes & Dust and Metal Hammer, who said of the album “Bristolian riff merchants expertly balance filth and ambience.”

With 2022 seeing two releases, the shoegaze anthem ‘Pictures of Dogs Having Sex’ and the Waterloo Teeth EP, the band make a characteristically left field move in covering the iconic 80s stadium pop song. After the demise of Small Pond Records this year, the band are now releasing via Fat Dracula Records, a label founded by the band and Small Pond founder Vlad Mateikov as a vehicle to put out their own music.
