The veteran frontman Ronnie James Dio passed away yesterday from stomach cancer. Famous for taking over from Ozzy in Black Sabbath and fronting other seminal metal bands like Rainbow, Heaven & Hell as well as his own band Dio he will be forever remembered as one of the original rock gods.
His wife Wendy said in a statement yesterday morning –
“Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he
was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss.” She added: “Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.”
It was announced earlier today (Monday, May 17), that Download Festival‘s second stage would be renamed the Ronnie James Dio stage.
His official website asks fans to leave any condolences on his Facebook page.
SPHERE‘s sympathy and thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
