For our next Reverbnation artist spotlight, we chat to Norman Matthew of Murder FM.

S] What, or who are your great musical inspirations?

NM] “Well, as a kid, KISS got me into the game, Guns N’ Roses lit the fire, Motley Crue kept it burning, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode and The Cure really brought the dark element to the forefront for me. I’m also a big Type O Negative and Misfits fan.”

S] What about personally, what kinds of themes and ideas can inspire your songs?

NM] “Anything and everything, man. At first things came from a personal place because it was all that I knew. Teenage loathing and angst! As time went on and my experiences grew, so did my approach. I began to look at the world around me and focus on the ‘we’ in songs and not just the ‘i’. I’m lucky enough to be able to have a career in music, and I know find it my responsibility to be the voice for the voiceless, and write from other perspectives.”

S] What song that you are working on right now best defines your sound, and why?

NM] “Our new single ‘Twisted Love Story’ and our previous single ‘Machine Gun Kisses’ best represent what Murder FM is and will be. ‘Twisted Love Story’ because of its dark undertones, industrial elements and just overall morbid sexiness to it that is very tongue-in-cheek. ‘Machine Gun Kisses’ for the straight-up riffage and attack, there’s no tip-toeing around that sound, it just kicks your balls in, and has a good hook while doing it!”

S] Do you have a message for any UK fans?

NM] “Our UK fans are one of the greatest things to ever come into our lives! Our success in UK has been astounding to us.We are forever grateful and appreciate it, and are biting our nails and counting the days until we can be back. Our first tour over there is something we talk about daily, we really really love the UK!”

S] What can people expect from your live show?

NM] “A dirty, messy, sweaty and a great time! I used to want to be the axis of evil, you know? The crazy goth kid in the room that hates everything, but now I really want the message to be more about people coming to our show to escape whatever madness that is living in their world and just enjoy. Let Murder FM take you for a ride. We’ll get on top and do all the work.”

S] What are some of your biggest challenges right now?

NM] “It depends at how you look at the glass, half empty or full? I try to be positive and think of obstacles as opportunities to earn what is about to come our way legitimately, rather than the keys to the castle just being handed to us. The biggest one at the moment is just trying to finish the new full-length and time it all out with touring and our return to UK, we keep getting lucky with so many cool shows to play that it can slow down the recording process. On top of that, I have been asked to remix bands including Hollywood Undead as well as produce a couple of bands, so very easily life can tie you up, but im not complaining because i enjoy a little pain with my pleasure.”

S] What’re your plans as we move into 2013?

NM] “We look forward to a full-length record and international touring! Just taking it to any and every place that will have us. We love the road, we love making music and we can’t stress enough how thankful we are to be here today.”
