What themes and ideas inspire your music?

Will] I tend to draw inspiration from people and the world around me…not to exclude myself, there’s plenty of inspiration that flows from within, but I find our world and the diversity of people, thoughts and feelings within it just fascinating.

S] What’s been a career highlight?

Will] At this point there are probably too many to count, but close to the top is the fact that we were able to successfully tour both the east and west coasts of the United States last year…all this without a label, manager or booking agent…it’s a huge accomplishment and we feel very fortunate to have been able to pull it off!

S] What motivates you outside of music – people and places, for example?

Will] Great question! We’re living through a very interesting time at the moment…not just in our country, but all around the world.  There are so many people going through difficult times, and what I find truly motivating is the fact that, for the most part, our struggles are bringing us all together! It’s truly amazing to see people galvanising into movements for change and the greater good around the world, and I sincerely hope to see it continue.

S] Which of your most recent songs best represents the music you make, and why?

Will] I don’t think I can choose just one.  One of the main philosophies behind Ships Have Sailed is that we don’t hold ourselves within a strict genre, and so we have a fairly diverse catalog.  This is a great thing because we have a large demographic, and most people can find something that they love in what we do, but the drawback is that questions like this are difficult…  That said, my ‘favorite’ song tends to rotate on a weekly basis…there are some I love hearing, and some I love playing live…it just depends on the situation and my mood at the time. I would encourage readers to check out our album ‘Moodswings’ and draw their own conclusions!

S] What are your big plans for the rest of 2017?

Will] Speaking of music, we are about to release a new single that we feel expresses our feelings about the transitional nature of the past year.  2016 was a year full of incredible milestones for us, but simultaneously was full of incredible hardships, both surrounding the project and our families and friends.  Our new single ‘Up’ is an anthem about pushing through these difficult experiences and creating your own light at the end of an oftentimes dark tunnel.  We can’t wait to share it with the world, and feel everyone react!
