How to Discover New Artists

Finding new music or inspiration may seem like an easy task, but it can be hard if you don’t know where to start. With so much content coming out constantly in the current age, it can be difficult to find the niche that best suits your tastes. Though most of us have versatile ideas of what makes something “good,” there are times when you really want something that feels right up your alley.

If you struggle with understanding your own tastes and preferences, look into a company like Mind Diagnostics that can help you understand where that insecurity comes from. Looking for new artists should be a fun experience, and not something that feels daunting.

Explore Outside the Box

Even if your primary focus is based on being inspired by music, looking at other mediums can be a big eye-opener for a lot of people. Talented visual artists like Mickey Lee can broaden your horizons and give you a new perspective on art and life. Creativity can come in many forms and looking beyond just music can give you the chance to broaden your horizons.

Ask Around

The best music recommendations I’ve ever received have been from friends and family. Though not everyone around you has the same taste as you, they likely listen to more of a variety than you may think. I’m not saying you need to ask your friend that exclusively listens to country music for her favorites, but if you have someone in your life who you feel may have some good hits to show you, it may be time to check in with them.

Another fun way to discover new artists is to actually listen to the songs that you see posted on social media. I think we’ve all seen a song posted on someone’s Instagram story and decided to skip past it, but if you’re really looking to find new music, this can be a great way to do so. The person posting it is doing it for a reason!

Let Your Apps Do It For You

After a while of getting to know you, many music applications will be able to curate playlists that suit your tastes and preferences. Though it may be tempting to listen to “Make You Feel My Love” for the 100th time, putting on a curated playlist while you go for a drive may actually give you new artists to become obsessed with.

In addition to that, most of these apps will have different options that vary depending on your mood. Whether you’re looking for oldies, alternative rock, or Top 40 hits, they’ve got you covered. While you listen, try to “like” songs that you love so that the app can get to know you even better. Over time, you won’t even have to actively look for music anymore.

Figure Out Your Faves

Everyone has had someone ask – “what kind of music do you like?” and not quite known what to say. Or, if you’re like me, you respond with something along the lines of – “I like all kinds of music.” But that’s not really true, is it?

Finding out which kinds of bands, singers and sounds you love the most can make a huge impact while you’re discovering new music. If there’s a band or song you really love, ask yourself why it is that you appreciate it so much. It may be their pacing, lyrics or just the way it makes you feel.

No matter what kind of music you discover, there are endless opportunities to find new artists. I have no doubt that you’ll be able to find some new favorites, and learn more about yourself along the way.
