Continuing their unstoppable rise at breakneck speed, Derry-based Northern Irish trio Cherym are delighted to announce their return with new single ‘Taking Up Sports’ released 5th July 2023 via Alcopop! Records.
The three piece are also delighted to announce a run of October 2023 headline tour dates, ahead of summer festival appearances at TRUCK, Rebellion, High Tide, Badlands and more (see below for listings).
Coinciding with the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup which begins on 20th July, the official music video for the new track was filmed at The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium and directed by Thomas McKeown. It sees the band take on Jordan McEneff, Sadou Diallo and Cameron McJannet from the Derry FC football team and also features Tramp vocalist Sianna Lafferty as love interest.
At its heart a love song about the stupid things we do to impress the ones we love, commenting on the single vocalist/guitarist Hannah Richardson says: “‘Taking Up Sports’ is a love song about a time when I had a huge crush on the sporty girl who played football—even though I myself am not sporty or athletic in any way, shape, or form—and about hilariously attempting to join the football team just to get close to this person. It’s an ode to the self-proclaimed stragglers who used to get their friends to forge notes for them so they could get out of double P.E, but it’s also a little nod to the WLW community and a reminder of the ridiculous lengths we’ll go to sometimes for the person we think is worth it.”
For those yet to join the bandwagon, Cherym are a three-piece from Derry in Northern Ireland with some seriously infectious songwriting credentials. Taking influence from The Smashing Pumpkins, Bikini Kill, American Football, PUP and Pixies, the trio formed after meeting in college over a joint love of garage rock, pop punk and a desire to be the biggest band in the world.
Starting out as a kick-back against the local music scene boys club back in 2018, the trio finally found mainland success in 2021 when they signed to Alcopop! Records for the release of their critically-acclaimed Hey Tori EP, showcasing their zingy, fearless new recipe for pop punk rock that centres the lived experiences of Gen Z queer women and non-binary people.
The EP’s success led to sizeable tours alongside The Beths, cheerbleederz, Arxx and more, with the band jetting out to the US for the first time at SXSW 2023 in Austin earlier this year, and the trio also tipped for big things in Kerrang! Magazine’s Sound of 2023 feature.
