Nova Twins don’t rest on their laurels. From kicking coronavirus home boredom by writing new material over FaceTime whilst in lockdown, to setting an array of online challenges for their fans to get creative with (riff challenges, t-shirt customisation workshops, make-up challenges and artwork competitions) these incredible ladies will not be taken down by a pandemic. The duo are a continual force to be reckoned with in the BLACK LIVES MATTER movement, making sure their voices are heard loud and clear, both through their social media channels and offline activism during the protests.

Today, Nova Twins release their new music video for “Play Fair” – a fan favourite track taken from their highly acclaimed debut album ‘Who Are The Girls?’, released on Fever 333’s Jason Aalon Butler’s ground breaking new artist collective, 333 Wreckords Crew earlier this year.

On the track, Amy Love and Georgia South (Nova Twins) say – “It’s the ultimate revenge tune, about powering through any hurdles that stand in our way. It’s a call to arms; rise against those who try to hold you back! If life hands you an unfair game, don’t play fair.”

Filmed under strict social distancing measures in a greenscreen studio with long-term collaborator Harry Lindley (director of previous Nova Twins videos for “Devil’s Face”, “Vortex” and “Taxi”). You can stream the single HERE or better yet, go listen to the album HERE.

Nova Twins were awarded Best UK Breakthrough Band at last week’s Heavy Music Awards. In an impassioned acceptance speech “It’s so incredible for us, especially as women of colour winning these rock awards because you don’t see it that often. This feels like a win for the whole community of POC alternative bands, the LGBT community, any minority group that feels like the doors were not open for them, this is another door open for us all. Let’s keep pushing forward, putting the pressure on, keep diversifying the space – there’s room for everybody!”

Trailblazers in their own right, Nova Twins use their platform to champion diversity and inclusivity with a high-octane, genre-warping approach; one that is present in every song they write and every performance they deliver. Turning heads in all of their endeavours, the duo creates a remarkable depth of sound via a myriad of bass and guitar pedals – a secret recipe they have tweaked and refined over the years, whilst dogmatically avoiding synthesizers in the process.

Refusing to conform to any template, the duo fuse bass-heavy, grimey rave sounds, taking inspiration from artists as diverse in style as Rico Nasty, The Prodigy, Rage Against The Machine, Ashnikko and New York Dolls. As such, the best friends have turned rock on its head, injecting their songs with boundless energy, barely controlled rage and heavy riffs.

Innovative in not only their musical output but in every element of what they do as artists, from designing and making their own outfits for all photoshoots and stage-wear, to the art direction of their music videos. Nova Twins are above all fearless and inspiring women of colour. Their modus operandi is to be the Voices For The Unheard, taking the socio-political experiences of their day-to-day and turning them into something that their fans can get lost in.

“’Who Are The Girls?” is dedicated to all the people who are beautifully diverse and creating their own lanes. It’s a celebration of those who feel like they don’t fit in! The title is ironic, as there is little representation of diversity at the shows we play and there wasn’t any to see when we were growing up”, say Nova Twins. “Our audience have been our biggest supporters, encouraging the creativity and ideas behind the album. It’s amazing to finally be able to translate our live sound onto an LP, so that everyone who wants to can join in on the madness! We feel 333 Wreckords is the perfect home (massive love to Jason of Fever 333 for inviting us into their family). We can only hope that this album empowers people the way they have empowered us. This one’s for all our Supernovas, keep shining bright!”

Jason Aalon Butler (Fever 333 / 333 Wreckords Crew) says, “The whole idea of the 333 WRECKORDS CREW is to offer a creative alternative to the banal structure of the music industry as well as supporting and propagating art that challenges. Nova Twins are literally the embodiment of this idea. Two BLACK WOMEN in rock music twisting the convention of a genre whose only chance of survival is to evolve; Nova Twins are that evolution. Nova Twins are the future. They are so damn important to this music and to the culture and I’m gonna make sure people see that. I couldn’t be more proud to announce them as the newest addition of creatives to the crew.”

‘Who Are The Girls?’, a 10 track joyride into the Nova sound, was recorded with legendary producer Jim Abbiss (Adele, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys) at his studio, Lime Green Monkeys. Former singles ‘Devil’s Face’, ‘Taxi’ (watch the ground breaking video here) and ‘Vortex’ received BBC Radio 1 spins from Annie Mac, heralding the Nova Twins as her “New Name”, as well as Jack Saunders, whilst being playlisted on Kerrang! Radio and getting chosen as “Single Of The Week” by John Kennedy at Radio X.
