Falmouth psych/garage rockers Mothman, The Man are pleased to reveal their new single ‘Too Long’ which is out now via Krautpop Records.
Commenting on the track, frontman Connor Childs says: “It’s a stoner and sludge-infused psychedelic track about the themes of lost and unrequited love…but ironically though. It’s more of a parody/tongue-in-cheek look at the cheesy, overserious psychedelic love songs of the late ’60s and early ’70s through a modern lens. This was the first track that I wrote out of all of the tracks on the album, and it served as a great reference point for the sound/songwriting approach I would incorporate into the rest of the writing process.”
The track is the latest to be taken from their new album Where’s Your Head?, released on 19th April 2024 via Krautpop Records, with the album artwork and tracklist also revealed today (see below) alongside preorders, which are live now: https://linktr.ee/
Recorded partly on tour in 2023 while promoting debut album 1000 Eyes, and partly using Falmouth University facilities once the tour was over, the record was produced by drummer Billy Mattock.
“It’s nice working with Billy since he was the first person I met when coming to Falmouth,” says Childs of the relationship. “It’s great to have a producer/engineer that I don’t feel scared to recommend any changes to! Our old producer, Billy Tucker, is fantastic too though. Neither is better or worse, I love them both. Logistically, it’s good having a talented producer in the band though. It makes the prospect of paying lots of money for mixing and mastering kind of null and void, which is always nice for broke people in their early twenties.”
During the writing process for the album Childs was steeped in a world of psychedelic, doom, and stoner influences which shine through on even the most casual listen to the record, trading off a more serious edge against a preference for music that’s both fun to play and also to listen to. “I think maybe that’s at the detriment of the pursuit of deep lyricism,” he laughs, “but I’ve just always had that mentality. Some of the bands/artists that I was listening to, and influenced the album the most, are The Melvins, Ty Segall, black midi, Wand, and Windhand.”
Part love song, part cautionary tale, the album’s lead single ‘Gigantopithecus’ was released late last year—a stomping psychedelic-inspired stoner rock track about discovering the mythical sasquatch, played in the video by James Rhodes. Mothman followed up with album closer ‘Mother Leeds’ 13th Child, Pts. 1 & 2’—an epic tale inspired by vocalist Connor Childs’ love of cryptid mythology and folklore.
Where’s Your Head? is also threaded with what Childs describes as “pretty goofy, story-led, tracks” that are more inspired by the “silliness of Mr Bungle‘s self-titled record and some of Zappa‘s stuff”.
The band have seen a wave of early support building at alternative tastemakers including CLUNK Magazine, Distorted Sound Magazine, Already Heard, Maximum Volume, 3 Songs & Out, Listen With Monger and more.
Fresh from a support slot with King Nun, the band have today announced a short run of April 2024 UK headline tour dates in support of the album, including a London show at The Star In Shoreditch on 23rd April.
