Crafins Studio, with the help of the Skoove piano-learning app, have found that self-taught artists have been dominating the Spotify music charts.

In total, 71% of the top 100 artists on Spotify in the UK are self-taught. This statistic alone both exceeds expectations, and challenges the traditional standard of music education.

As well as the previous statistic, the study also showed that only 13% of the Spotify top 100 have a music degree. Although, an additional 3% started a degree, but didn’t finish it, leaving a huge 84% without even starting a music degree.

Ultimately, this study shows that music education is not necessary for people who aspire to become a musician. Music creation has become incredibly accessible, especially with the growing amount of streaming services, including Spotify. Many artists have been creating popular music for years with no music education, including John Lennon, Ellie Goulding, and Noel Gallagher.

More huge names in the music world that are self-taught include: Ed Sheeran, James Arthur, David Gilmore, Calum Scott, Mark Knopfler, Bruce Dickinson, and Stormzy.
