While creatives from larger cities like London and Manchester get lots of attention, those from Hull and East Yorkshire are equally as talented but are often forgotten about. Here are ten of the coolest creatives from Hull and East Yorkshire.

Calum Scott

Born in Beverly, Calum grew up around North Ferriby and Hull, learning to sing and play the drums. In April 2015, Scott auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent, performing Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own“, and received a standing ovation along with the Golden Buzzer, pressed by Simon Cowell.  From there, he finished sixth in the Britain’s Got Talent finals and then embarked on a series of shows around the UK. Scott released his first studio album, titled ‘Only Human‘, in March 2018, and released a second, titled ‘Bridges‘, in June 2022. From humble beginnings in East Yorkshire, Calum Scott has gained a worldwide fanbase throughout his career. As well as being a pop singer, Scott is a known advocate for mental health and suicide prevention, performing in 2020 in aid of Mind.

Hearth

Based in Hull’s Old Town, Hearth serves as both a restaurant and a bakery. The bakery on the ground floor serves freshly baked bread and pastries, while also offering a lovely brunch menu. The restaurant provides a range of wines and cocktails, as well as a menu focused around local and seasonal ingredients. The dishes are either cooked over the custom hearth and served on large plates, or cooked slowly in the smoker and served on smaller sharing plates. Meals can then be finished off with dessert from Hearth’s bakery.

Imogen Hart

Based in Yorkshire, Imogen Hart is a 22-year-old singer-songwriter. In 2015, her debut single, “Save Me“, held the number-one spot on Hull Kingston Radio for two consecutive months. Releasing her debut EP, ‘Give Me A Moment‘,  in 2020, Imogen has been described as “one of Yorkshire’s most impressive up-and-coming singer-songwriters” (Alan Raw, BBC Introducing Humberside).  Taking inspiration from Taylor Swift and Gabrielle Aplin, Imogen is known for her emotional and captivating acoustic performances that leave audiences mesmerised.  Imogen frequently plays shows live in Hull and East Yorkshire, including Humber Street Sesh, Trinity Live and Beverley Folk Festival.

Plant & Paint

Found in Hull’s Fruit Market, Plant & Paint sells everything you need to care for plants, as well as a wide range of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

Robert Aramayo

Born in Hull, Robert Aramayo attended the Julliard School before pursuing his acting career. From 1016 to 2017, Aramayo played the role of young Eddard Stark in Game of Thrones. He later starred in the Netflix psychological thriller, Behind Her Eyes, in 2021. Aramayo’s fame grew in 2022 when he had the opportunity to play Elrond in the Lord of The Rings TV show, The Rings of Power.

Mark Page

Mark Page – aka Mak – is the founder of The Sesh and Humber Street Sesh, both created as a platform for local musicians. Although it started with humble beginnings, The Sesh quickly became a community event that Hull is proud of. After 17 years, The Sesh is still a legendary and extremely popular event in the city.

Eleanor Tomlinson

Raised in Beverely, Eleanor Tomlinson made her acting debut in 2008 in Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging. She also starred in Poldark (2015) and The War of the Worlds (2019).

Daniel Mawer

Born and raised in Hull, Daniel Mawer is a singer-songwriter and guitarist. He was a member of Low Hummer (pictured), one of Hull’s most exciting bands, but after the release of their new EP, they have sadly decided to part ways. Mawer has performed solo sets of his own original songs and covers at the likes of The Sesh and Trinity Live.

Hannah John-Kamen

Born in Anlaby, Hannah John-Kamen proved herself a talented actress, starring in hit movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and Ready Player-One (2018).

Brodie Milner

Brodie Milner (who is now based in Hull, but originally from Bridlington) wears his songs like an ill-fitted suit. Combining intelligent lyricism with intricate melodies, his music feels nuanced, evocative, and a bit too sad for a summer’s party. Listeners can expect to hear influences from the likes of Ben Howard and Fionn Regan.
