Hot Milk have released their debut album A Call To The Void, and it’s the pop-rock album you’ve been waiting for. If you have heard anything from Hot Milk or any of the singles you would instantly recognise the distinct sounds from the start.

‘WELCOME TO THE…’ starts the album off with a mixture of ambient and electronic sounds before both Hannah Mee and Jim Shaw begin vocals on the track. ‘HORROR SHOW’ begins with a Prodigy-esque sound and a bouncy pop verse that is sure to get stuck in your head.

‘BLOODSTREAM’ is again very pop, where you’re waiting for it to kick in but it just never happens. That being said it is yet another very catchy song, with hooks you won’t forget quickly. ‘PARTY ON MY DEATHBED’ is a combination of genres with the ever present pop-rock sound still coming through but also featuring Jim Shaw rapping.

‘ALICE COOPER’S POOL HOUSE’ is a full blown pop-punk banger that is destined to be played loud and screamed along to live. Beginning with a classic 90’s pop-punk riff, the song fires into a verse sung by Hannah Mee before Jim Shaw comes back for the chorus.

‘OVER YOUR DEAD BODY’ is the heaviest sounding song on the album with bass rumbling throughout the verse before being drowned out crunchy guitars and Jim Shaws screamed chorus. A departure from the sound of most of the album its more metal than pop-rock but there’s no complaints here.

‘BREATHING UNDERWATER’ is as close to a ballad as Hot Milk are going to get. Sounding like a cry for help, the song is lyrically the best on the album. Even with its more emotional tone, the distinctive sound that you would have become used to at this point is still there, and the song is instantly recognisable as a Hot Milk song.

‘FORGET ME NOT’ closes the album and starts off slow and with another more emotional tone, the song begins to take shape as electronic sounds come in for the chorus. With Hannah Mee and Jim Shaw trading vocal duties verse for verse this is perfect closer for A Call To The Void.

More pop than rock, the debut album from Hot Milk has let them craft and establish a sound through 11 tracks that is going to be instantly recognisable from here. A Call To The Void is going to establish Hot Milk as one of the most exciting bands in British rock at the minute, and with a number of tour dates upcoming the band are only going to continue to grow.
