German metalcore titans Annisokay are back with a 6 song EP ahead of their upcoming European headline tour. Abyss Pt 1 draws on influences from across metal/rock while also having a pop edge.

‘Into The Abyss’ is a two minute intro easing you in. With piano layered over a range of sounds the track builds into a drop where guitars and drums eventually appear, before slowing down to end with just piano and vocals. Next is ‘Human’ which had already been released as single and is a metalcore banger. Heavy riffs, thunderous drums and a combination of clean vocals and aggressive screams take the song to the next level.

‘Ultraviolet’ feels like a crossover between Bring Me The Horizon and Limp Bizkit. The track uses electronic sounds throughout giving it a modern BMTH feel, while the pre-chorus definitely feels Fred Durst inspired. With a soaring chorus that is sure to get stuck in your head, ‘Ultraviolet’ should be nailed on to be a staple of the band’s live shows.

Another previously released single, ‘Throne of the Sunset’ is heavy from the first second. Centred around a chugging riff, the song builds up to the bridge where it really kicks in. A blistering combination of vocals, guitars and drums make the bridge the standout part of the whole EP with every member of the band shining.

‘Calamity’ is a slight departure from the sound of the rest of the album. The track is a reimagined version of German pop star Leony’s hit song ‘Remedy’. Still featuring huge metal tones, Annisokay show here they aren’t afraid of pushing their sound to the limits. With catchy pop hooks turning into aggressive metal screams, the song is a must hear.

The final song on the EP ‘Time’ starts off with electronic sounds, before going into a clean verse. While the rest of the tracks manage to balance clean and heavy tones well, ‘Time’ mostly sticks to a clean sound with very few heavy sections. Probably the weakest track on the EP, it is a strange choice to close but takes nothing away from what come before.

Just short of 20 minutes long, Abyss Pt 1 is a quick fire dose of metal. With most of the tracks brimming with explosive energy it is the perfect EP to kick off Annisokay’s upcoming headline tour. As the band hit the UK in October, the EP is the ideal way to warm up for the gigs.
